Day 20 - Morning Survey, shopping, Sandy Island Snorkelling and Night Survey

Yesterday was a busy day! Poppy and I had Morning Survey at 5:30am. We headed down to bathway but on the way the dogs from the house opposite us got through their gate and followed us down to the beach. The puppy came half way and went back but the fluffy dog that looks out of place ran ahead of us the whole way with it’s short legs and fluffy bum bounding along it was quite funny to watch. But when we got to the beach the 3 stray dogs that everyone in the area ‘Prince’ and his two pals started growling at the fluffy dog. The fluffy dog started crying and jumping up and poppy for protection. We had to stand between the 3 dogs and the fluffy dog. I was concerned I would have to use the rake I had to split up a dog fight. Prince has killed other dogs before, he’s very territorial but loves people. He also kills hatchlings sometimes but he lives between the beaches and comes and goes as he pleases. The fluffy dog followed us the whole way up and down the beach. We saw no turtle tracks. When we crossed the main part of the beach the 3 dogs had split up and were circling us and fluffy, and every time we turned away they’d charge forward and stop when we looked. We managed to get off the beach without a dog fight breaking out and fluffy pelted up the hill, fluffy bum wiggling.

When we got back to the house I had about an hour before going to Sateurs with Steph, Poppy and Mandy to do the weekly shop. I also go myself some ice cream 🍦 chocolate flavour and a peanut flavour one. We got back to the house about 10am and at 11am Poppy, Talitha, Tom and I got a lift from Steph to Levera. Captain picked us up in his boat and took the  four of us over to sandy island which is across the water to the right of sugarloaf which is the main triangular looking island you can see in most of my pictures from Levera. The boat ride over was rather bumpy!

The water over there was the clearest I’ve ever seen! And the sand was the whitest I’ve ever seen as well! We went snorkelling over a reef which was really pretty. I couldn’t go too deep because I didn’t have my fins and the current was quite strong and I didn’t want to get stuck out in deep water. Apparently the others saw a lion fish which is coool. I saw some cool brain corals, tube corals and different fish. We then chilled on the beach and I finished my book. At 4pm Captain took us back to Levera and Steph picked us up. Tom and Mandy cooked dinner, they used the extra sauce from my Shepard’s pie yesterday to make a pasta sauce and served it with spaghetti and a Grenadian green that I can’t remember the name of but it begins with c and looked like gillyweed when cooked. It was really nice.

Steph and I picked up Sharka and Praggi at half 7 and headed to Levera for Night Survey. I went on the first run with Sharka. We released a couple of hatchlings from the night before and saw some hatchlings heading to sea but didn’t see any adults on any of our runs. Steph and Praggi  saw one adult on their last run. In the morning Steph and I measured the distances from the nests and found some hatchlings emceeing from one. We dug up 12 live and 7 dead from one nest and 3 live from another and found one live stuck in the sargassum so there are lots to release tonight. The dead ones were brought back for Kate to carry out necropsy on.
