Day 39 - Sandy Island Snorkelling and Night Survey
On Wednesday we went on a group trip to Sandy Island. Kate let me borrow some of her spare fins so I could snorkel deeper. We got Captains boat over at 9:30am and set up camp on the beach. Helen and I buddied up as snorkel buddies and went out to sea right away to snorkel over the nearby reef. Everyone else either started sunbathing or swimming. We made our way around the reef and saw loads of different fish and even 7 baby cuttlefish all swimming in a line looking at us which was really cute. After about an hour we headed back to the beach 🏖. I read for a bit and went for a swim because of the heat before Rachael, Helen, Kirsten, Marina and I went exploring to find a shipwreck Kate told us about. It looked like a big fishing boat that was a wreck beached on the rocks, it was a lot bigger than I was expecting.
After we explored for a bit we headed back to the others. Helen, Marina and I went for a snorkel on the further out reef and followed it round to the other reef near the shore. I saw a really big puffer fish which was really cool. Once I eventually got out of the water I made a sand turtle while everyone was sleeping in the sun.
We then headed back to the house at 3pm and Grace and Helen cooked dinner. They made fried plantain, black bean rice and soy fried green beans. At 19:20 Rachael, Tom, Marina, Kirsten and I picked up Lawson and headed to Levera. Rachael and I went on the first run with Tom. We released hatchlings from the night before and found lots of hatchling tracks but no adult turtles all night.
