Day 30 - Bathway and Night Survey
Yesterday we planned to go to Mt Carmel falls but because of the rain it was too muddy for a Hike so we decided to go to the beach instead. In the morning Kirsten, Tom, Marina, Rachael, Helen and I headed to Bathway. We all went for a swim, it then started raining but it was okay because we all stayed in the sea anyway. Once it passed the the others sunbathed and marina and I read under the beach umbrella 🏖.
At 1pm we headed back to the house and waited for the arrival of the last new volunteer of the season. Grace arrived at 2pm, she’s 31 and from New York and works in theatre. We introduced ourselves before her and Kirsten had some intro training while I read, made lunch and chilled for the afternoon. Steph and Kirsten were on cooking duty. They made Chickpea Koftas, tzatziki, veg and jerk spiced fried rice, flat breads and salad. Very yummy!
Helen, Tom, Rachael and I then headed to Night Survey with Steve. I went on the first run with Tom and Rachael and Helen went on the second with Steve. When we went on the first one we didn’t see any adults but we found a couple of nests dug up by some of the stray dogs, we found four live hatchlings in one and 3 dead ones and one dead one in another. We took the dead ones to the end of the beach with us and dug a small grave, said a few words in a mini service for them and marked with with a cross of sticks and a drawing in the sand of a turtle. We didn’t see any adults on the rest of our runs 🙁.
