Day 18 - Petite Anse Hotel and Night Survey

Yesterday we went on a group trip to a fancy Hotel called Petite Anse. We left at half 9 and walked to Rose Hill to get a bus to Sateurs and walked from there. It was a really lovely day walk along the sea front but it was rather hot and sticky! Tom invited  Anton so we met him there, who is 16 and who’s from Kentucky. He’s lived in Grenada for 7 years with his family spreading the word of god. We know him through the swim club. When we got there we set ourselves up by the pool, Poppy and I swapped sun loungers so she was in the sun and I was in the shade because we were both trying to move ours to the opposite places! The pool was quite small but we were basically the only people there so it was like having a private pool. We all ordered drinks, I had a rum punch and it was very very strong! Had to have it over a very long time. We all went for a swim and I read my book for a while before we ate lunch. I had chicken quesadillas with sweet potato fries covered in melted cheese and an iced tea. Very yummy indeed! We then had another swim, I stayed in the pool pretty much until we left, only getting out to have a second iced tea. We got a taxi back to the house at about half 3.

When we got back I showered and Talitha and Steph made a noodle, green bean and aubergine stir fry with boiled eggs which was yum. It was a really lovely relaxing day.

I then got ready and Tom, Poppy and I left at about 19:20 to pick up Praggi and head to Levera for Night Survey. I went on the first run with Tom, we released a load of hatchlings that had been rescued the morning before but didn’t see any adults. On my second run we rescued loads and loads of hatchlings from the sargassum, they’re all getting caught in it, it’s a huge problem at the moment. I was having trouble sleeping so admired the stars, they were so clear.

On my third run we also didn’t see any adults but instead got soaked by very heavy rain, normally it comes in bursts but this rain wouldn’t stop. Instead of laying on the sand at the other end we hid under palm trees a bit closer. We were exactly what you would call a pair of drowned rats! Absolutely dripping. We got back to the shed at half 4 and decided to wait 45minutes until the morning run. At 5:15am Poppy, Tom and I went back out on the beach and Tom and I measured distances from some of the identified hatched nests and Poppy went along the sargassum and rescued any hatchlings for release tonight. There were so many birds circling to pick them out of the seaweed!
