Greece Day 29 &30 - Last day, release, Flight!
Yesterday we had a new person arrive called Jamie. I showed her how to clean a tank and turtle for Kosmos and helped move and take Foxy to Mike for treatment. I then showed Jamie how to do the laundry and how we prepare feeding for the turtles. As it was wednesday we had to include vitamins In some of the fish.
2 new volunteers arrived, Manon from France and Lisa from Germany. We all said goodbye to Amy as she got a taxi to the airport but then she arrived back about an hour later as she realised her flight was actually on Thursday not Wednesday!
By the afternoon all the turtles and tanks that needed cleaning were done and by 3pm we were packing the van and car to take Odessyus and Moody to be released! Adam and I went with Mike, Dagne and Katerina and Eve drove the other car with Amy, Flo, Jamie and Gabby.
Moody was very active in the car, trying to hop out of the box so we decided he was first to be released. When we got to the beach we placed the turtles boxes near the sea and Mike, Eve, Adam and I got ready to snorkel. Once we were in the water Moody was put into the water and we got to see him enter, he was quite cautious to start off with, it was an amazing experience to see his first few moments in the sea again. He cautiously swam forward and came round the front of us before finally heading off towards deeper sea, we followed slowly behind mike making sure to keep our distance and not stress Moody out. We stopped following once he took his first breath and waited at the surface to see if he would surface again but he swam off into the distance. Once he was out of sight we headed back to the beach and I got out and dried myself as best as I could before getting dressed to help put Odessyus in the water. Gabby and I lifted Odessyus into the sea as Mike, Dagne, Eve and Flo snorkelled with him, he apparently rested on the bottom for a while crawling a bit searching for food but then went speeding off into the distance.
Releases are definitely the best part of being able to work at a rehabilitation centre, it's what it's all about, seeing them back in their natural habitat.
After the release we headed to a nearby bakery as tradition after a release, and Adam got a hugeee sugar donut and I got some mini Pain au Chocolat and then we headed back to the rescue centre. We showered and all sat around the picnic bench with beer and cider having a chat, then at 7pm we all (Mike, us, Eve, Megan, Jamie, Manon, lisa, Flo, Amy, Stijn, Zonne, Dagne, Gabby) went to Zahoulis as a last meal for Adam and I which was really lovely. I had grilled Halloumi with peppers, fried Zucchini and Broccoli. Adam had 2 chicken leg souvlaki, 1 pork souvlaki and 2 pitas.
After out meal we all went back to the rescue centre for more cider and beer whilst we chatted all together.
Today Adam and I got up early and I finished packing the last few bits before we got the tram to the rescue centre. I said goodbye to the turtles and then everyone else before our taxi arrived and we headed to the airport. We checked our bags in and had a look around the shops before having croissants for breakfast and buying some snacks for the flight.
