Greece Day 15 - Turtle Release
This morning Adam and I got up and set up the Chlorine Bucket, folded dry towels and took temperatures and behaviour notes of the turtles before breakfast. When the others arrived we said goodbye to Callum before he got a taxi to the airport. Adam cleaned Piou tank and turtle and I cleaned Sprite and Camille's tanks. I was on tube feed so Erini prepare the emeriade mix again and I put it into the syringes and throughout the morning tube fed Camille, Ariadni, Platis and Arya. Adam, Amy and I cleaned Sotiris tank (big tank 1) and I did a lot of washing up.
In the afternoon Nina was prepped and so was Thekla and Adam and I were lucky enough to be picked to go on their release. We took the car with Mike and Erini to a quiet beach about 45mins away where releases usually take place. Adam put Nina in the water by himself as she was small and we watched her swim away, Mike and Erini snorkelled close by behind her for a while to make sure she was okay. Then I helped put Thekla in the water while Adam, Erini and Mike snorkelled behind her. It was an amazing experience to be able to release them into the water. Nina had come into the rescue centre this year with a Hook ingestion which she managed to poop out last week without damaging her cloaca which was amazing and she was eating and diving so was good to be release. Thekla had been at the rescue centre since July 2018 so she had been there a while, she had a head injury which is now healed and it was really nice to see her released. The last releases of the year will be done before the end of October because the water gets too cold to release them so the turtles here by the end of October will be here until April at least. That means there should be a few more releases soon as they want to get as many turtles released before its too cold.
When we got back to the rescue centre a new volunteer had arrived but everyone else had gone back to the apartment so I took her to the apartment and then got the tram back whilst Adam waited at the rescue centre. We then went to McDonald's as Adam wanted to try the triple cheese burger and I got a double chicken burger and then we got Cherry Juice and Pepsi from the supermarket and take away Zucchini fries from Zahoulis and ate everything back at the RC :) We then went and folded all the dry towels and put on some more washes before locking up.
