June Highlights, Ascension Island 2023

As per usual the month of June absolutely flew by! With the 5th July marking 8 months since arriving on Ascension.  My view whilst typing up this blog!  June brought about the end of the turtle season, our last day monitoring tracks and nests and our last nest excavation. On the morning of the 6th June whilst carrying out a nest and track survey, Anna and I saw a manta ray swimming in the shallows of Clarence Bay (Long Beach) and it was one of the most magical experiences, I could have watched it swimming the entire day.  On the 14th June Dee held a Conservation Law meeting where she went through the relevant documents for conservation law on Ascension, I was really interested but unfortunately a lot of it was too confusing for me to understand, I find the way law is written quite inaccessible unless you’ve studied law.  Outside of work we started a girls volleyball group and have been doing weekly sessions on the US base; which is something I’d never don...

Ascension Dew Pond Walk 2023

Dew Pond Challenge  On the 23rd April Anna and I took part in the Dew Pond Challenge! There were two categories – walkers and runners – we had ambitiously decided a few months ago we were going to run, but time ran away with us, and we did no training, so we decided on the week to enter as walkers instead (mostly because the entire thing is up hill). We registered at turtle ponds at 7:30am and all dipped our foot in the water (sea to summit style) as a tradition. At 8am we then set off and made our way from turtle ponds, up needles, through one boat and two boats and then up the mountain, finishing the walk by making it to Dew Pond (the highest peak on the mountain).  All in all, it took Anna and I 2 hours 8 and minutes to complete. It was a very challenging walk but we managed to keep a good pace the entire way, although I did make Anna laugh by chatting the whole way until the mountain and then I became deathly silent as we huffed and puffed our way...

March 2024 Maldives

March has been a very busy month and again has absolutely flown by! This month we released one of our turtles back into the wild! Adam visited me at the beginning of March, and I did lots of snorkelling with hawksbill turtles and black tip reef sharks!  Here are some of the highlights of my March in the Maldives.  On the 1st March I was just at the end of giving a turtle presentation to our volunteers when some women came to the centre and asked if any of us would be free to be taken on a Tour by their sons who are part of the local scout group. They were doing their tour guide badge! We said yes (Me and Volunteers David and Lina) and met them at the Harbour to begin our tour. First we had to fill out their notebooks with information of where we were from, they then told us about how you can get to the island by boat and by plane, how to get to the airport and how far away it is.
