June Highlights, Ascension Island 2023

As per usual the month of June absolutely flew by! With the 5th July marking 8 months since arriving on Ascension.  My view whilst typing up this blog!  June brought about the end of the turtle season, our last day monitoring tracks and nests and our last nest excavation. On the morning of the 6th June whilst carrying out a nest and track survey, Anna and I saw a manta ray swimming in the shallows of Clarence Bay (Long Beach) and it was one of the most magical experiences, I could have watched it swimming the entire day.  On the 14th June Dee held a Conservation Law meeting where she went through the relevant documents for conservation law on Ascension, I was really interested but unfortunately a lot of it was too confusing for me to understand, I find the way law is written quite inaccessible unless you’ve studied law.  Outside of work we started a girls volleyball group and have been doing weekly sessions on the US base; which is something I’d never don...

March 2024 Maldives

March has been a very busy month and again has absolutely flown by! This month we released one of our turtles back into the wild! Adam visited me at the beginning of March, and I did lots of snorkelling with hawksbill turtles and black tip reef sharks!  Here are some of the highlights of my March in the Maldives.  On the 1st March I was just at the end of giving a turtle presentation to our volunteers when some women came to the centre and asked if any of us would be free to be taken on a Tour by their sons who are part of the local scout group. They were doing their tour guide badge! We said yes (Me and Volunteers David and Lina) and met them at the Harbour to begin our tour. First we had to fill out their notebooks with information of where we were from, they then told us about how you can get to the island by boat and by plane, how to get to the airport and how far away it is. Greece! Archelon Rescue Centre - Arrival and Day 1

Yesterday Adam and I arrived in Greece at around 15:00 local time. It's 2 hours ahead here. The flight went quite quickly, Adam slept most of the way and I coloured my under the sea colouring book :) Once we arrived we got a taxi to the rescue centre where we met the current volunteers and had a quick tour of the centre. Shortly after we arrived another new volunteer named Amy also arrived. At 18:00ish we left the rescue centre and took the tram to the volunteer apartment which we are staying in. There are 2 rooms, each with 4 bunk beds so lots of room although there are now 9 volunteers, 2 people stay at the rescue centre each night, we all have to do this twice a week. Once we had settled and dropped our stuff of f we went to a local supermarket to buy food for lunch and then Niels, Zonne, Amy, Lewis, Adam and I went out to a local restuarant for called Pitta Bar for dinner.
