Day 13 - Morning Survey, Sateurs and Victoria
This morning I was up at 5am with Poppy to head out on a morning survey on bathway beach. We walked the length of the beach to check for any turtle tracks or nest evidence. We found one set of what could’ve been tracks but they weren’t very clear. It poured with rain on us and when we got back I was actually cold for the first time since getting here! I had to make myself a cup of tea (how very British). We got back and I read for a bit and had toast for breakfast. At half 9 Kester came to pick up Poppy to go to Sateurs to do the food shop, Talitha and I tagged along so we could get a ride to buy biscuits, chocolate and other snacks 😊. Once we were done and had returned to the house we helped Poppy unpack the shopping. We had wanted to do a hike today but the weather wasn’t great so we decided against it.
Poppy, Talitha and I then walked back to rose hill to the bus stop with Tom where we got the bus to Sateurs, we left Tom their and got on another bus to Victoria. When we got there we were a little underwhelmed, there were a couple of shops and bars but not much to do, and we spent a lot of time talking to locals and trying to convince Poppy it wasn’t rude to not engage in long conversations with unwelcome male attention as we walked. At this point I was really hungry but we couldn’t find somewhere to eat that didn’t have lots of guys loitering outside so we bought some crisps and got the bus back to Sateurs. Here we met a friendly local called Jefferson who hailed down our next bus for us and we returned to the house, a little soggy from the on and off rain. The bus rides were thrilling to say the least! The drivers are rather Kamikaze and extremely fast, I love watching all the people who get on though, it ranges from women in fancy dresses looking like they’re very important to school kids going home to men finishing a day of work in the fields, it’s fascinating to see. Again it boggles the mind how they cram so many people in, there are 12 seats in the back and then these modified fold down seats in the gaps they use when extra people get on.
On our walk back from the bus stop at rose hill we saw a little boy in school uniform walking close to us. He pointed at Talitha and Poppy and said you have dogs you showed me. It turned out he was one of the boys we’ve met on the beach one day and he remembered us talking about pets. His name is Daniel and he’s really sweet. We walked him home and said hi to his family before he waved us goodbye.
It was interesting to explore some more of the island but wasn’t my favourite town we’ve been too. Once we were back I read a bit, fried some eggs and played cards. My job today was assistant chef, so I helped Steph make her veg frittata. After dinner I helped clean the kitchen and dishes and then had a chilled evening without Steph and Poppy just chatting and reading. Tomorrow we’re going to gouvaye where they normally have fish Friday each week but this weekend is ‘fisherman’s holiday’ so there are celebrations in the day Saturday. Exciting 🐟!
