Day 11 - eco club school visit

Today I got back from the night survey exhausted! I showered went to bed! At 12:30 we headed off to the same school we went to last week for their last Eco club lesson. Tom and Steph lead the lesson, it was a round up of everything they’ve learnt about during the lessons; Turtles, birds, ecosystems and pollution. We started with a quiz with questions from each of the topics. The students had to stand up and when they answered a question they were given a pencil prize and allowed to sit down. Once they’d all answered the questions we split them into four groups. I took one group and my topic was pollution. We played hangman with them, my words were Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Greenhouse, Plastic, Leaching and Chemical. We then took them outside and played the turtle game, which is where they all lined up and took a number from a hat. Steph then set the scene and the students had to wiggle to the sea and every so often she’d stop them and say something like ‘a crab has eaten all the hatchlings divisible by 10’ and those kids were out, and ‘white light is confusing those ending in 8, but wait ocean Spirits was able to save number 18’ until one turtle was left and they’re the winner. The kids then wanted to play the game where one person stands with their back to everyone and everyone else has to run to them and if they turn you have to be still, if you move you’re out and the first person to touch the person turned around wins. we played that a few times before it turned to running races aha. A couple of the girls from last week were chatting to me, putting their arms around me and decided I was their sister 😊 they were really sweet, Ester, Daisy and one who I didn’t get the name of. They asked me more questions and did my hair in a plait and told me about their graduation next week before they go to secondary school.

After the school we came back here and I washed my clothes and read some of my book before dinner. Steph made a pumpkin Macaroni cheese with green beans fried in soy sauce and garlic with a salad. Very yummy! Poppy, Talitha and Tom went with Xia, Sharka and Kester on the Night Survey leaving Steph and I to a night off! I’ve got some data to write up this evening before I head to bed nice and early 🛌 💤

I started writing this blog on the first day of the new year. Back at this time last year I had no idea I would be bringing in the new year in the Maldives! But here we are! I've now been on Naifaru for a whole month! How time is already flying! Some highlights of my first month have been meeting and getting to know the turtles, snorkelling with a manta ray and taking samples turtle for an X-ray at the hospital!  I am living on Naifaru, which is the captial Island of the Lhaviyani Atoll (North of Male). It is a local island rather than a private or resort island so it is very conservative and we must have out Knees, shoulders and everything inbetween covered at all times. This mean we swim in leggings and rash vests most of the times, we are allowed to wear swimming costumes and bikinis when we go on excursions to uninhabited islands though.  I left the UK on the 14th December, only two months after leaving Ascension Island. January & February 2024 Maldives AMC Blog

My second month in the Maldive's has been as busy as my first! My work in the marine centre has been very varied but very similar at the same time. I've become a lot more confident in my role, but still feel like I'm very new and am learning every day. Mornings every day are spent mostly in the centre with the volunteers doing morning centre duties and the afternoons consist of a range of activities with volunteers or daily admin I have to complete. Recently we welcomed Karen to the team as the other Marine Biolgist, she has just joined mid February and I'm looking forward to sharing some of the workload with her!  I've included some of the highlights of the end of January and then February below: On the 19th January we hosted a community beach clean, 60 members of the community joined us included many of the local scouts which was really lovely!  At the end of January we recieved one adult turtle admission.
