I’ve arrived in Grenada!!!

After a long day of travelling yesterday the other volunteers and I made it to the project house 😁 it took about an hour and a half to get from the airport to the house but we were able to watch the sunset along the way which was really cool. We were then greeted with Vegetarian Lasagna for dinner which was delicious. After being shown around our accommodation we were given a briefing  for what was to come today before being dismissed to finally sleep 😴.

This morning we were up for 7am for a beach orientation, Kester (one of the project leads) took us to levera and bathway, bathway being where we can spend any down time at and levera being the nesting site. Once we returned to the house we were given a presentation on the project as a whole, and then specific training for the data collection and research we will be carrying out. This included how to pack the kit bags, how to do egg counts, carapace measurements, scan for tags, fill out data sheets, determine nest location, apply metal flipper tags and in what order to do everything in.

We were then given some free time so the 5 of us went down to bathway beach for a swim, I also read quite a bit before returning to the house before dinner. Today we had a yummy stir fry with boiled egg for dinner and finished the evening with some card games. Tomorrow I’m on cleaning duty, as well as my first night survey shift which I’m really excited for as it’ll be the first time I get to see the leatherbacks nesting!!
