Week 5 - FSC Millport
This week we have been getting the Aquarium ready to open to the public. On Monday we went to White Bay to collect shells for the Hermit crab tank, seaweed for most of the other tanks, rocks with gutweed on them for the sand tank and rocks with live Barnacles on them for the Barnacle Tank. Cork have done a few trawls in our boat and brought up some animals to go in our Aquarium such as a Hermit Crab, some Squat Lobsters, Harbour Crabs, Shore Crabs, Velvet swimming Crabs, Flat Fish, Spiny starfish and common starfish, deadmans fingers, Scampii, Sea mouse etc. We also released the animals we decided not to keep using the centres marine lowering device on the pier, which consists of a large fish box attached to rope and a winch.
On Tuesday we did more arranging of the Aquarium and office jobs such as creating spreadsheets for recording the species in each tank and their in and out dates as we try not to keep things for more than a month. Luke and I also did a beach clean at Farland Point and Pottery Bay to collect cotton bud sticks from the beach.
Wednesday was mostly an office day apart from clearing the back of the aquarium up and Thursday we did a main feed for the animals. We filleted a Mackrel and dropped small amounts of the white meat into the tanks and gave the guts to the mud tank and the head ot the Hermit Crab. We also set up classrooms ready for an event this weekend called Teachers Dirty Weekend which is all about teacher training for outdoor learning and getting dirty outside.
On Friday I had a long day. I did a split shift and worked the morning shadowing hospitality and the evening on the Bar for the Teachers event. My hospitality shift was 7am-12pm, I started the morning with helping to set up the dining room for breakfast, putting out the cutlery and cups on tables, disenfecting surfaces, setting up the toast station and cereal station. Setting up Lunch making station and serving breakfast to the visitors. I also helped rinse plates to be put in the dishwasher, checked and filled tea and coffee stations and cleared up any mess made. After Breakfast I helped tidy away everything and vacumned the dining room carpet. I then helped with House Keeping where we checked the rooms for any damage, cleaned them, vacumned and made the bedding ready for the next guests. I then went back to the flat for a break and started work again at 5pm. When I got back teachers were arriving and the bar was opening right away, Jenny and I worked the bar together, having dinner at 6:30 and kept the bar open until 11pm. Adam Arrived Friday Night.
On Saturday the Dirty weekend events were cut short because of fears the ferry was going to be cancelled due to high winds in the afternoon so instead of 3 2 hour activities it became 2 activities each an hour and a half long. Beth and I helped out with a snorkelling session, Christina and Jack ran the session and Beth also got in the water (which is freezing at the moment!) and I was on shore cover in case anyone got into any difficulty. Once we had sorted out their kit and briefed them etc, they had about 25 mins in the water before all happily returning to the warmth of the mini bus. Jenny and I cleaned up the Allen Lecture Theatre and had an early finish. Adam and I had a chilled afternoon and in the evening Luke came and watched Pirates of the Carribbean with us .
On Sunday Adam and I went for a walk into town to have brunch at a nice cafe in Millport, the weather was a bit on and off but we went for a nice walk after as well and I took him to the centre to see the aquarium and museum we have. In the evening we had Chinese takeway for dinner which was very yummy and Adam left early monday morning.
