Meet the turtles at Atoll Marine Centre January 2024

There are five species of sea turtles which can be seen around the Maldives. The green turtle and hawksbill turtles are the ones people are most likely to see when snorkelling around resorts as they are seen most coastally. Loggerheads, leatherbacks and olive ridleys can also be seen but are found much deeper as they are found more pelagic waters. Here is some information about the turtles we currently have at the centre:

As per usual the month of June absolutely flew by! With the 5th July marking 8 months since arriving on Ascension.  My view whilst typing up this blog!  June brought about the end of the turtle season, our last day monitoring tracks and nests and our last nest excavation. First Month in the Seychelles! – Month 1 (April – May 2026) Assomption

It’s been a while! I stopped writing up blogs whilst I was working in the Maldives as I never had any time to sit down and write them, but I’ve decided to try and get back into writing up what I’m getting up to now that I’m on a new adventure in the Seychelles. I have recently started my new role as a Field Research Officer with the Seychelles Island Foundation based on Aldabra Atoll, UNESCO World Heritage Site. However… after one month in the country I have only just arrived at Aldabra. I landed in the Seychelles (on Mahe) on the 9th April, after waiting a few months for my work visa to come through. Getting out here was a little stressful, there is a North West Season here (October ish – April ish) and South East season (May ish – September ish). Intro to Aldabra, Arriving, first Tropic Bird Survey & first camp!

I can’t believe I have almost been here for one month! It has gone very fast. Here is a quick intro to Aldabra, followed by a condensed summary of what I have been getting up to over the past 3 weeks. Aldabra is the world's second-largest coral atoll, and is located east of Africa (We’re actually closer to Madagascar than the rest of the Seychelles). It is officially part of the Aldabra Group of islands in the Indian Ocean that are part of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles and is over 1,000 km southwest of the Mahé (Where the Capital of the Seychelles is). Aldabra is 34 km long and encloses a huge, shallow central lagoon. The atoll is made up of four main islands: Grand Terre, Malabar, Picard (Where the research station and my house is located), and Polymnie. Due to its extreme isolation, Aldabra features a high degree of endemism (wildlife only found here).
